Loan questions and answers

Is it worth paying extra on my loan?

Every extra krone goes straight to the balance, so you stop paying interest on it for the rest of the loan. The calculator shows how much interest you save and how much sooner the loan is paid off, for a monthly amount or a one-off payment. Keep a savings buffer before paying extra.

What is the difference between the nominal and the effective rate?

The nominal rate is what the bank charges on your balance. The effective rate also includes fees and monthly compounding, and shows what the loan really costs per year. Compare offers on the effective rate, and enter both in the calculator so it can check that the fees add up.

What does an interest-only period mean?

During an interest-only period you pay only interest and fees. The balance does not go down, so the loan costs more in total or the payment is higher afterwards. Add the period under "Periods" to see what it costs you.

Annuity or serial loan: what is the difference?

An annuity loan has the same payment every month, with mostly interest at first. A serial loan repays the same principal every month, so payments start higher and fall, and you pay less interest in total. Switch the loan type in the calculator to see the difference for your loan.

How much must I pay to finish my loan by a certain year?

Choose "Done by" and a year. The calculator works out the extra monthly amount, or the one-off payment, that finishes the loan by then.

What is a startlån?

A startlån is a loan from the municipality for people who cannot borrow enough from a bank. It often runs for a long time, up to 50 years, and may start with a period without repayments. Choose "Startlån" as the loan type to fill in the usual terms.

How does the calculator work?

It works month by month the way banks do: annuity or serial, interest on actual days (365/365) or equal months (30/360), monthly fee and setup fee. The figures are estimates. Your bank's figures are the ones that count.

Do you store my loan?

No. What you enter stays in your own browser, with no account or sign-in. We count anonymous visits without cookies. If you use "Ask AI", your question and the loan figures, but not the loan's name, are sent to OpenAI to write the answer.
